We revisited Chateau de la Cazine for a 2 night stay on our way back from Portugal to Caen. Our first floor room faced the park giving us gorgeous views of the autumn colours. The classic white furniture is very attractive and we enjoyed the diagonal position of the bed, facing the TV and the windows. The shower and loo with frosted doors behind the bed are typical of a boutique hotel.
We dined in the restaurant on both evenings on delicious steak and turbot which were beautifully presented. The waiters were attentive and friendly. Don't miss the cheeseboard with its wide selection of interesting French cheeses. Breakfast, in contrast, is disappointing. There were no menus on our first morning and no cold water provided on the second. Unlike most French hotels there were no rustic loaves.
The setting of the Chateau is ideal for walks in the park or the arboretum and generally the hotel is quiet and peaceful. This was spoilt during our stay by three long outbursts of the fire alarm. On the first occasion I was in the shower and nobody notified us that it was a test so we didn't need to exit the building.
Despite the alarm we plan to visit the chateau again in the future as we were warmly welcomed and it is set in a beautiful rural part of France.
